House No.4

Anne Sharp and her husband Tom have been in No.4 since 2004 and, together with their four children - Hugo, Constance, Ralph and Guy - they aim to establish a friendly family atmosphere. There are frequent events held in the House for the girls, such as chocolate fountain evenings and birthday suppers, and this helps to create a positive House spirit. One former Head of House, Emma Hicks described how “I shall always treasure No.4 as a place where I have so many fantastic memories and I will miss it very much.”
The staff in the House aim to inspire each girl to achieve her full potential, while at the same time providing a strong pastoral support network for the girls. Girls are encouraged to develop their skills on the sporting, drama and musical fronts, and working together as a team is very much part of the ethos of the House. With its reputation for brightly painted walls, its legendary red dining room and its cosy sofas, No.4 is a comfortable place to board and a home within the College for the girls under Anne’s care. Anne teaches English and Drama.
Having Great Fun
Monday 06. of February 2012
I thought that I would combine some of the recent events in No.4 to show that despite it being the bleak winter months, we are still having fun.
Alison Vennard returned after her leave-out weekend to find that her friends had made not only a 3D card for her wall, but a colourful marble cake. As her thumbs-up in the photo shows, she is very happy.
While many staff might find the snow annoying due to transport difficulties, all of us on the campus were delighted with the timing of the snow that arrived on Saturday afternoon. The girls planned a massive, fun snowball fight after Chapel with their friends in the other houses, one so great this may also have to go on the Sports News.
Fun, but lots of hard work as well, has been the Inter-House play festival. Rebecca Bonini has been rehearsing the girls in an impressive professional way, and Sunday was not only their dress and tech rehearsal, but their performance as well. The photographs of them rehearsing in the weeks building up to the performance shows how seriously and passionately they took it all, and how well they worked together as a cast.
Finally, fun but quite stressful, were the Inter-House debating semi-finals for the senior debating team of Poppy Donaldson and Rebecca Bonini against No.9. They represented the house with eloquence and gave intelligent points as part of their argument but unfortunately did not quite get enough points to get to the finals.
Lent Leave Out
Monday 30. of January 2012
The final weekend in January was a busy one for many of the girls. Rebecca Connell, Jess Coulman and Rebecca Raby-Smith spent several hours on Friday and Saturday in the foyer of Waitrose, where they had the novel idea of collecting signatures to create a birthday book for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Money was collected at the same time for the WOHAA charity that they are working so hard for, and as the photo shows, there is a huge bottle of Malvern Water that Old Malvernian, Rhys Humm, has kindly donated as part of the present to the Queen. There is also a montage of photos of the town, as well as of Malvern College that the girls have carefully designed which the girls will use for the front cover of the birthday book. On Monday and Tuesday evening, the girls will tour round the boarding houses to get more signatures and donations. With over 1,200 signatures collected over the weekend, they have not only raised the profile for the charity - Wings of Hope, but also raised lots of money for a good cause. Meanwhile, two of our Remove girls spent the weekend in the wilds of Shrewsbury doing CCF exercises and came back cold, exhausted but having had a wonderful time.
