Economics, Politics and Business Studies
Malvern has a long and proud tradition of teaching Economics and Politics and we have recently added Business studies to the department. Currently we teach A-level Economics, Business Studies and Politics and IB Higher and Standard Economics. Well over 200 students are currently studying these subjects in the Sixth Form.
Virtually all of our pupils have no formal experience of these subjects before joining the department, although a good grade at GCSE Mathematics and an ability to interpret numerical data are important for the study of Economics. Students are expected to read and research widely to keep up with current world events and good language skills are crucial for these rigorous academic disciplines. The department is staffed by eight well qualified full-time teachers who, along side their strong academic backgrounds, bring to their teaching a wealth of experience from the world outside education as well as being authors, senior examiners, workshop leaders and inspectors. Debate, having an opinion and being independent learners are all encouraged through stimulating teaching, a range of guest speakers and competitions and a culture of freedom to explore the world through three analytical and stimulating subjects.
More students go on to read Economics, Politics, Business or the Social Sciences than any other subject in the curriculum, including over 30 to Oxford and Cambridge in the last ten years (four successful applicants for 2012 entry). Students are frequently accepted on a range of related courses at LSE, Bristol, Warwick, Durham and York and further afield. Former students have studied at Harvard, Penn State and the Warton Business School; we can even boast an Economics Nobel laureate in James Meade as a former student. OM Economists are currently working in OFGEM, the ECB, Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.
